THE PROGRAM

The Future Educators and Leadership Academy (FELA) is one of the three screened Small Learning Communities offered at John Adams High School. Over the course of a student’s high school career, FELA focuses on preparing them to pursue career paths in education and leadership. Our rigorous program helps students develop traits important to these specific career tracks by emphasizing character building, discipline, behavior management, organizational, technical and communication skills through the lens of elective courses, citywide internship opportunities, Summer Youth Employment, and the U.S. Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) program.

PAID INTERNSHIPS

Through our partnerships and internships, students have the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the field of education and leadership.

  • City Parks Foundation - The Learning Gardens Training Program engages high school students in five months of garden based learning, exploring topics including urban gardening, growing food and biodiversity. Students develop leadership skills and earn high school credit after completing 60 hours of instruction, with the opportunity to participate in a paid summer internship with City Parks Foundation.

  • The New York Hall of Science - While in the program, students are trained to interact with over 400 hands on exhibits, perform science demonstrations, as well as help facilitate educational programs and workshops. In the process, participants acquire communication skills, knowledge of science and the scientific process, experience with inquiry,  as well as experience in teaching.

LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

  • Global Kids - The Community Based Organization works closely with John Adams staff to encourage students to become global thinkers and leaders.

  • Ramapo For Children - This retreat which takes place on a beautiful 250-acre campus in Rhinebeck, New York, offers students the opportunity to share new adventures, discover new strengths, form new bonds, and be inspired to grow as individuals and as a team.  Students will have the opportunity to participate in high ropes courses, team building games, trust activities and more.

  • NYC GREAT! - This program teaches high school girls how to become goal setters and leaders that chart their own path to success by focusing on five pillars: College Readiness; Leadership; Introspection; Mastery Learning; and Building Sisterhood.

  • NYC Urban Ambassadors - Similar to NYC GREAT!, this program teaches high school boys how to become goal setters and leaders that chart their own path to success by focusing on five pillars: College Readiness; Leadership; Introspection; Mastery Learning; and Building Brotherhood.

TUTORING & MENTORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

  • CUNY Peer Enabled Restructured Classroom (PERC) - CUNY employs the Peer Enabled Restructured Classroom (PERC) model of instruction. Through this model students in STEM courses work in small groups with Teaching Assistant Scholars (TAS) leading their instruction. TAS teaches science or math course material to small groups of approximately five students. Through peer education, PERC improves student academic performance in STEM courses and graduation rates for students in both PERC and TAS.

  • Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports (PBIS) Ambassadorship - PBIS Ambassadors serve as peer-mentors and peer-mediators, who impact the social-emotional growth of the whole school community.

  • Read Alliance - Teen tutors are trained in leveled curriculum (Reading for All Learners Program), data collection and behavior management. We pay our tutors an entry-level wage, while providing training and continuous support. We also offer the opportunity for tutor promotion (leading to “Lead Tutor”), resulting in a leadership role within the classroom.
