Be Welcoming.

One of the keys to any organization's success is to make people welcome. Nobody should be excluded. There are many ways to show this to give anyone the sense of belonging. It's in the little things we do - a smile at someone looking alone, a polite or friendly greeting at someone who just comes into the room, a "high-five" to acknowledge someone who did something right or moving over to give a seat to someone who is looking for one. These are just a few of the actions that begin to change the environment around us. They may not be grand gestures, but they constitute the 'open arms' we extend to our friends and family.

Be Mindful.

A smile draws people in, but genuine concern is what gives them the sense of belonging. Looking out for one another is  what drives "Being Mindful" in the PBIS sense. Lending a pencil or a piece of loose leaf to a classmate in need of one; cheering up someone who is feeling left out, acts of service like opening doors, erasing the board, in the service of the common good. Picking up litter or just plain throwing garbage into the trash can. Being the responsible person and doing what is expected; that's what being mindful is all about.

Be the Solution.

Become an active member of the school. "When you see something, say something." This does not just apply to the police department whenever unattended packages are seen. Everyone in the school community has a part, however small, at keeping the school and everyone in it safe, happy and productive. It may involve something big - like being part of a program that seeks to address a school-wide problem; or, a small act that may not even get recognized like opening the door for someone, or telling someone about a spill in the hallway, or making sure that the water in the water fountain does not keep running, or closing the door in an air-conditioned room. When our students begin to think that Adams is their home and they take action to keep it CLEAN, SAFE and truly, A SECOND HOME, then, we would have succeeded.

PBIS Ambassadors

The students are part of the campaign to make PBIS work in the school. Every term, each SLC selects a team of students who become PBIS ambassadors. The application process  is open to students who wish to serve in a leadership role among  their peers. PBIS Ambassadors are selected according to a set criteria, and if successful become part of the PBIS team. The PBIS team members from each SLC become the collective voice of the studentry and they work hand in hand with the staff to implement the school's vision.
